Additive Manufacturing and Reverse Engineering in Cranioplasty: A Personalized Approach to Minimize Skin Flap Complications

نویسندگان

چکیده

Cranioplasty is a procedure performed to repair defects in the human skull bone by surgically reconstructing shape and function of cranium. Several complications, both intraoperative postoperative, can affect procedure’s outcome (e.g., inaccuracies reconstructed shape, infections, ulcer, necrosis). Although design additive manufactured implants preoperative stage has improved general quality cranioplasties, potential complications remain significant, especially presence critical skin tissue conditions. In this paper, an innovative improve chances positive when facing conditions cranioplasty described. The proposed approach relies on structured planning phase articulated series digital analyses physical simulations personalized medical devices that guide surgeon defining surgical cuts designing implant. ultimate goal fast recovery for patient. procedure, described extenso was positively tested case study, which presented high risk factors.

Cranioplasty prosthesis manufacturing based on reverse engineering technology

BACKGROUND Most patients with large focal skull bone loss after craniectomy are referred for cranioplasty. Reverse engineering is a technology which creates a computer-aided design (CAD) model of a real structure. Rapid prototyping is a technology which produces physical objects from virtual CAD models. The aim of this study was to assess the clinical usefulness of these technologies in craniop...

Skin flap complications after decompressive craniectomy and cranioplasty: Proposal of classification and treatment options

BACKGROUND The list of complications reported after decompressive craniectomy (DC) and cranioplasty is progressively increasing. Nonetheless, the exact incidence of these events is still ill-defined. Problems affecting skin flaps after DC and cranioplasty have never been accurately analyzed in papers and their impact on patients' prognosis is largely underestimated. METHODS In a 10-year time,...

Cranioplasty complications and risk factors associated with bone flap resorption

BACKGROUND Decompressive craniectomy (DC) may be performed in patients with acutely raised intracranial pressure due to traumatic brain injury or stroke. It is later followed by a cranioplasty procedure (CP) in the surviving patients. This procedure is associated with a high frequency of post-operative complications. Identifying risk factors for these adverse events is important in order to imp...

Reverse engineering techniques for cranioplasty: a case study.

This paper presents rapid prototyping and reverse engineering techniques applied to create an implant for the surgical reconstruction of a large cranial defect. A series of computed tomography (CT) images was obtained and purpose built software was used to extract the cranial geometry in a point cloud. The point cloud produced was used for: (a) the creation of a stereolithographic (STL) physica...
